How to Draw a Wizard Staff
For those who are fans of fantasy novels and games, the figure of the wizard will be very well known. These individuals have magical powers, can cast spells, and do all sorts of incredible things. So, if you have ever been in awe ofWizards, and you like to draw, then you are going to love these tutorials.
I will be showing you how to draw a perfect image of aWizardfrom start to finish and we would be doing this in 10 easy steps. The drawing would capture his outfit, staff, beard, and hat. How amazing is that?!. You should also note that the more familiar you are with each step, the more likely your final draft would be flawless and the more likely it would appeal to an audience. That said, we would start up by drawing a dummy. The manikin would serve as a foundation for our final sketch. Ready?. Let's rock and roll!.
HOW TO DRAW A WIZARD
Getting a great drawing of a samurai would need you following 10 basic steps. These are:
- Drawing the Rib Cage
- Drawing the Hips and Abdomen
- Drawing the Legs
- Drawing the Arms
- Drawing the Head
- Drawing the Staff
- Drawing the Clothing
- Drawing the Hat
- Drawing the Beard
- Drawing the Final Line art
STEP 1: DRAWING THE RIB CAGE
Using the above picture as a guide, theWizard´s rib cage should be drawn using a front view perspective.
Going on, therib cageshould be started off by drawing two curved horizontal lines ( the one on top will represent the trapezoids and the one on the bottom will represent the front side lower part of the ribcage). The lower line should have a deeper arc than the top line. Then you should draw two curved out vertical lines that connect the earlier drawn horizontal lines at their extremes. Having done that, divide the rib with a vertical line across the middle. When that is done, as seen in the picture, draw another curved vertical line representing the clavicle. Having drawn it, go on to highlight where the head will be by drawing a small circle at the top of therib cage.
STEP 2: DRAWING THE HIPS AND ABDOMEN
For theabdomen, you should draw one pretty short vertical line that extends down from therib cage. For thehips, you should draw them to take the form of a man's underpants as depicted in the image. This is where the legs of our character would emerge.
STEP 3: DRAWING THE LEGS
OurWizardcharacter would be drawn standing with his legs apart almost parallel to the shoulders. Because the legs will be fully covered by the Wizard´s clothing, we are going to simplify by the construction of the legs to just using sticks and circles. Each leg should be started off as a one line connecting the hip to the circles representing theknees. When you've done that, the continuation of the leg should be another vertical line connecting knees to the feet. Then draw the feet as seen.
The difference between one leg and the other is the leg on the left is supporting the body´s weight because it almost alines with the center of the body. Meanwhile, the other leg appears extended more separated from the centerline of the body.
STEP 4: DRAWING THE ARMS
The arms of our character should be sketched close to the body and they should be drawn using afront view perspective.
Having laid that out, the upper arms should be started off in the form of big tubes and should reduce in size as they get to the elbows. Elbows should be aligned with the bottom of the rib cage.
The forearm on the right will be posing grabbing a staff that we will draw in the next steps. The hand should be drawn closed, with the fingers around this staff we are going to draw later on. The forearm on the left will be drawn pointing downwards with the hand laying on the hip. The fingers will be the only part visible from the hand.
STEP 5: DRAWING THE HEAD
For thehead, first, draw a small neck that extends from the circle at the top of the rib cage. Then draw the head as a medium sized oval with a squared part on the bottom, representing the jaw. Flowing from that, draw a vertical and a horizontal line that intersects within the oval. These lines would be useful for drawing facial features later.
STEP 6: DRAWING THE STAFF
Thestaff will be the next element we are going to draw. The staff will be drawn in front of the right leg. The top part of the staff will be thicker on top.
STEP 7: DRAWING THE CLOTHING
On top of our manikin´s body, we are going to draw the different pieces of clothing. The main garment will be the wizard´s robe that will be tight by a rope on the waist. The robe will be drawn covering fully the legs and the sleeves will be wide. On top of the robe, we will be drawing a cape that will be hanging from the shoulders to the feet.
STEP 8: DRAWING THE HAT
A Wizard´s pointy hat is another of those iconical elements that everybody always pictures in their minds when they try to visualize a Wizard.
In this case, we will draw the hat with the point a little bit folded and pointing down, so we can convey the idea of the hat being old and a bit worn. Also, the hat will have a big brim that will hide the top part of the head.
STEP 9: DRAWING THE BEARD
Finally, we will draw our manikin´s beard and hair. The hair will be drawn long and coming out under the hat, like a pair of curved lines on the sides of the head.
The beard will be drawn covering the jaw a reaching the chest. The beard´s bottom will be drawn as a succession of curved lines finishing on a pointy end. You should draw the curvy lines of the beard a little bit irregular so it will look more organic and believable.
STEP 10: DRAWING THE FINAL LINE ART
For this stage, you would need to fade out the dummy already drawn. You can use a kneaded eraser. This is to prevent the manikin´s sketch from interfering with your final sketch. Using traces lefts of the original manikin´s sketch, you would then go on to draw the final lines. It should comprise of well-detailed features, a well drawn face, robes, beard and cape. If you wanna know how to draw faces like a pro you should check my tutorial on how to draw faces clicking here.
With that done, you should then throw in some shading effects to your drawing. Shading has an easy of making drawings appear so real and flawless. So go on and make the strokes of your drawing darker. You can then shade places like our characters belt, underarms and his neck region. If you are interested in knowing more about how to shade with a pencil, you can check my free tutorial clicking here.
Also, another important detail is to drawwrinklelines from the clothing.Wrinklesin clothing come from tension areas, like thearmpit and thewaist, where the fabric of robe is being pulled, stretched or folded.
CONCLUSION
Right here is where we call our drawing tutorial of aWizard a wrap. You can go on and express some satisfaction at what you have been able to put together on your drawing pad. However, you should not hang up your drawing tools just yet. We advise that you repeat the procedure a couple of times more. This would enable you to have a better grasp of character drawing and soon enough you will be able to polish up on your skills and draw without seeking the assistance of a drawing tutorial.
